The Story of Craftswright & Makery
I’ve always been more excited to build than buy.
I fell in love with creating at an early age. I grew up with a strong foundation of DIY mentalities and the encouragement to not only fix things that were broken, but build things for myself and on my own terms.
Because of this, handcrafted means something special to me. It means to strive to produce items that are are not only beautiful, durable, and special, but items that I would love to own and use for as long as I’m around.
In a modern day filled with mass-produced products, purposefully made to fail early and NOT last a lifetime, there’s a growing movement of people reconnecting with the skill in their hands. A rising return to craft.
As a member of that movement, I knew I wanted to do my part to help people just like you learn new skills, challenge yourself, and be a better maker. I want to learn with my fellow Craftswrights and share along the way.
Craftswright & Makery was born.
What started as a hobby quickly grew into much more than just woodwork.
Why Craftswright
Why The Name
We wanted a name that spoke to the heritage of craft professions while being all-inclusive.
Crafts /krafts/ - hobbies and activities involving skill in making things by hand.
Wright /rīt/ - a maker or builder.
Why the Big Red Hand
“The hand is the tool of tools.” - Aristotle.
We also chose a red-orange hand as our logo for many other reasons. Too many, in fact, to fit in this short paragraph. But you can read the whole story here if you’d like.
Hi, Impact
BIO STUFF
Cody Patey
Owner / Craftswright / MST3K’s Biggest Fan
I often refer to myself as a Jack of all trades; my fiancé calls it “hobby hopping.” I’m a huge nerd for Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Starship Troopers (the 1st movie and the novel). Something about woodworking, particularly the philosophies of the Arts & Crafts Movement, grabbed ahold of me and hasn’t let go. My goal is to inspire that same passion for makery in others.
Brenda Masterson
Taskmistress Extraordinaire
Brenda (engaged to be Mrs. Craftswright) plays a key role in the “stay grounded” department, as well as lending a helping hand in the shop from time to time. It may be begrudgingly, but it’s help. Her passions may lie outside of woodworking but we don’t hold that against her.
She also is the director of the ever-critical, “Hey, what about this….” Idea Department.
Loial
Assistant
Loial joined our "company" a little over two years ago and has been an invaluable helper in the shop (when he isn't afraid of the equipment).
Laney
Shop Hand
Laney is the newest addition to our crew at just under 1 years old. She enjoys aggressively sniffing things, wagging herself in half, and having elf-paws.
Leelu
Retired - 12 years
Leelu left us in mid 2019 for a much better position at the Big Workshop in the Sky. She was a masterful, doofy-eared, morale booster and will be sorely missed.
Lizi
Retired - 14 years
Shortly after Leelu left us, Lizi followed suit. Never afraid to share her opinion, being quite bold with it at times, the workshop has been a little too quiet without her.
